SPF in Skincare: The Most Important Way To Protect Your Investment

Let me let you in on a little secret: SPF is the number one and best way to protect the investment you’ve made in your face!

Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, is a crucial element in any skincare routine. Despite its importance, many people misunderstand or overlook its use. I’m here to help you understand the importance of SPF in your skincare routine, provide guidance on choosing and applying sunscreen, and dispel common myths about sunscreen.

What is SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures a sunscreen's ability to protect your skin from UVA & UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, contributes to skin cancer and causes premature aging.

The number associated with SPF indicates how long you can stay in the sun without getting burned compared to if you were not wearing any sunscreen. For example, if you use SPF 30, it means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than you could without protection before burning.

What Sunscreen Should I Buy?

Choosing a sunscreen can feel overwhelming. When choosing an SPF, consider the following:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: This protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreen that includes Zinc Oxide is the only option for broad spectrum protection. It protects against UVA and UVB radiation.

  • SPF 30 or higher: While SPF 15 is the minimum recommendation, SPF 30 provides more adequate protection.

  • Water resistance: Especially important if you are swimming or sweating.

  • Formulation: Options include lotions, gels, sprays, and sticks. Choose one that suits your skin type and lifestyle.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use?

To ensure full protection, apply about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover your entire body. For the face alone, a nickel-sized dollop should suffice. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Should I Put Sunscreen on Before or After Other Products?

Sunscreen should be the last step in your morning skincare routine. Apply it after your moisturizer, but before makeup. If you're using a chemical sunscreen, it needs to be absorbed into the skin, so apply it before other products. If you are using a physical (mineral) sunscreen, it can go on after other skincare products, or mixed into your moisturizer, as it acts as a barrier on the skin's surface.

Benefits of Applying SPF

  1. Prevents Sunburn: The most immediate benefit is preventing painful sunburns. Chemical sunscreens can work to decrease risk of sunburns…think Banana Boat or other chemical spray sunscreens.

  2. Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer: Regular use of SPF significantly reduces the risk of developing skin cancers, including melanoma.

  3. Prevents Premature Aging: UV rays contribute to premature aging signs like wrinkles, sagging, and age spots. This type of protection needs to be broad-spectrum; UVA for aging & UVB SPF (think Zinc Oxide) to help maintain younger-looking skin.

  4. Avoids Hyperpigmentation: Helps in preventing dark spots and uneven skin tone caused by sun exposure.

Dispelling Common Sunscreen Myths

  1. "I work from home so I’m inside all day": UVA rays can penetrate windows, and exposure to blue light from screens can also affect the skin. Wearing sunscreen indoors is still important.

  2. "It gives you a white tint": Modern formulations have improved significantly. Look for sunscreens labeled as "sheer" or "invisible" which blend better with all skin tones.

  3. "It’s oily": There are many non-greasy options available. Gel-based, water-based, and dry-touch sunscreens are excellent choices for oily or acne-prone skin.

  4. "All sunscreens work the same": Sunscreens vary in formulation, coverage, and additional benefits. It’s crucial to choose one that offers broad-spectrum protection, is suited to your skin type, and fits your specific needs (e.g., water resistance, anti-aging properties).

Bottom line: SPF is a non-negotiable component of a healthy skincare routine and is the BEST way to prevent aging. It protects against immediate and long-term skin damage, reduces the risk of skin cancer, and keeps your skin looking youthful. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, apply it correctly, and integrate it into your daily routine to reap the maximum benefits.
