The Importance of Skincare as Your Foundation

If you’ve ever purchased a home, hearing the words “this out has got good bones” might sound familiar. It’s because we all know that a solid foundation is what makes everything else shine. Skincare is no different!

Creating a solid foundation for healthy skin involves a straightforward, but effective, skincare routine. There are five key pillars essential to achieving and maintaining optimal skin health: face wash, Vitamin C, retinol, moisturizer, and SPF.

Each component plays a critical role in caring for your skin, addressing various needs from cleansing to protection.

1. Face Wash

What it is: A face wash, or facial cleanser, is a product specifically designed to clean your face by removing dirt, oil, makeup, and other impurities.

Why it is important: Cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine. It prepares your skin to absorb other products effectively. Proper cleansing:

- Prevents clogged pores, which can lead to acne.

- Removes pollutants and bacteria that can cause infections and skin irritation.

- Helps maintain a balanced skin pH, reducing the likelihood of dryness or oiliness.

Choosing a face wash suited to your skin type (oily, dry, combination, or sensitive) ensures you get the best results without causing irritation. Remember, wash two times, twice a day. The first wash removes dirt, makeup and pollution. The second wash acts as a gentle exfoliator which allows the following actives to penetrate the skin.

2. Vitamin C

What it is: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant used in serums and creams that protects the skin from free radicals and environmental damage. Pollution is everywhere and our skin absorbs it, leading to pre-mature aging.

Why it is important: Incorporating Vitamin C into your skincare routine provides numerous benefits:

Brightens Skin: It helps fade hyperpigmentation and evens out skin tone.

Boosts Collagen Production: Promotes skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Protects Against Sun Damage: Although not a replacement for sunscreen, it enhances your skin's defense against UV radiation and pollution.

Use Vitamin C serum in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizing to maximize its protective benefits.

3. Retinol

What it is: Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A, is a highly effective ingredient known for its anti-aging properties. It's available in various strengths and formulations, including creams and serums. It can also be added to therapeutic facials and delivered at higher dose by an aesthetic provider.

Why it is important: Retinol offers multiple skin benefits:

Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture and firmness.

Improves Skin Tone: Helps fade dark spots, acne scars, and pigmentation.

Promotes Cell Turnover: Encourages the shedding of old skin cells and the production of new ones, leading to a fresher, more youthful appearance.

Retinol should be applied at night, as it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Start with a lower concentration to allow your skin to adapt and minimize potential irritation.

4. Moisturizer

What it is: Moisturizer is a skincare product that hydrates the skin, locking in moisture to keep it soft, smooth, and resilient.

Why it is important: Keeping your skin well-moisturized is essential for several reasons:

Prevents Dryness: Hydrates the skin, preventing flakiness, itching, and irritation.

Maintains Skin Barrier: Supports the skin's natural barrier function, protecting against environmental damage and infections.

Enhances Skin Elasticity: A good moisturizer keeps the skin plump and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

Choose a moisturizer based on your skin type—lightweight gels for oily skin, richer creams for dry skin, and formulations with added benefits like anti-aging ingredients for mature skin. If you are my client, I will be happy to make a good recommendation that meets your needs and budget.

5. SPF

What it is: SPF measures a sunscreen's ability to protect your skin from UVA & UVB rays. Sunscreens come in various forms, such as lotions, creams, sprays, and sticks.

Why it is important: Choosing the right sunscreen that will protect against both UVA (radiation that causes aging) and UVB (radiation that causes burning) is vital. Mineral sunscreens, those with zinc oxide, are the only ones that protect against UVA & UVB. To that end, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable part of any skincare routine due to its protective benefits:

Prevents Sunburn: Shields the skin from harmful UV radiation.

Reduces Skin Cancer Risk: Regular use lowers the risk of developing skin cancers, including melanoma.

Prevents Premature Aging: Protects against UV-induced aging signs like wrinkles, sagging, and dark spots.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, even on cloudy days and when indoors. UVA rays can penetrate windows and is also found in blue-lite coming from our electronic devices. Ever wonder why you seem to have aged quicker since the COVID pandemic? It’s not your imagination…. the world went virtual and our dependence on blue-light devices soared. A broad-spectrum SPF is a must-have.

Here's the SPF I use. We also carry it in studio:
